The 2019 bass season opener and the OKBT Lake St Clair event have come and gone. And what a season opening event it was. This lake never disappoints, and at this time of year it can be a special day out there for sure. This year was no different. With 57 anglers competing in the event it was sure to produce some big bags and close competition. The weather started off in the morning with a stiff breeze that got the lake rocking a bit, but it sure didn’t slow the bite down. As the day progressed the breeze settled down into a near perfect day to be on the water. The bite was on and the fish were hitting the scorecards.
After the board was turned off with an hour to go and because of multiple lead changes throughout the day, this left everyone wondering who would take the top spot at the end of it. In the end the win went to Spencer Bouchat with 97.50”,, followed by John LaCasse at 95.50” and Paul Winkel at 95.50”. John LaCasse also had Big Bass honours with a 20.25″ smallmouth. With impressive bags throughout the field you had to be better than 90” just to break into the top 20. In total there were 330 fish scored on the day, and the total number of fish caught I couldn’t even imagine as several anglers reported 40+ fish days with many others well into the 20+ fish numbers. Lake St Clair produced again. People ask why we go there, and this is why. Its hard not to go to one of the best smallmouth fisheries in North America at probably the best time of the year.
I would like to thank all the anglers for coming down to St Clair and supporting the OKBT event. It was the largest turnout yet. We would also like to thank the companies that are supporting us this year. Thanks go out to Fogh Marine, Old Town Canoes & Kayaks, DAIWA Corporation – Canada, Scotty Fishing Products, Mega Jigs, Gagnon Sports, Werner Paddles, Blind Rage Baits, SAIL, Tightline Anchor, Aces and 8,s musky baits, Dakota Lithium Batteries, Bam Baits, and Max Die Group.
See you all at the Stoney/Lovesick Lake event on July 20th
